March 9 Reflection-"R" Word Final thoughts

We just finished participating in the Erase the "R" Word campaign and had 466 students and staff pledge to not use the "R" word in their everyday vocabulary.

THANK YOU ALL!

Now that we are finished, tell me what impact the videos we watched had on other students. What did you hear other students saying? Tell me if you have had anyone use different language and recognize it. Just share your thoughts on our efforts in the comment section below.

I've also included a couple of videos that further demonstrate the need to eliminate the "R" word.

Last thing, if you would like to sign the online pledge at http://www.r-word.org/, please do so and encourage your family and friends to do the same.

  1. The videos probably changed some students' vocabulary or mad them realize how much that word hurts.I noticed that after we watched the videos some students started using the word less or deliminated it completely.I noticed that some students were harder to get to and they didn't see anything wrong with the r-word.I think that if we showed them videos of actors or anyone famous that had a disability they might realize that they are just the same as everyone else.I liked the videos and I think they are good for demonstrating why we should erase the r-word.I also think it might be cool if we make a video of things the kids do in their day like if we filmed them in their classrooms and gym class it might help people see that they have classes and gym period just like everyone else.Well, that's all.

  2. I haven't seen or heard anyone change their language since we started this year. Most of the people in my team have taken this as a joke more than anything serious. But we are in middle school and we're teenagres or becoming teenagers so there's not much you can ask for them to do.But I think that just getting them to listen to us was a huge acomplishment.

  3. I Pledged!!! =)
I noticed a couple people using the term "mentally disabled" to replace the r-Word, and its great that they're putting their pledge into action. I think we did a good job in "spreading the word to stop the word", and i hope it doesn't fade out.

  4. Most people in my advisory just made fun of the videos, but my friend realized why people were making a big deal out of this . She knew she shouldn't make fun of people, and that I didn't like it, but she just didn't know why. She learned about how making fun of people with a disability was making fun of people that cant defend themselves. She never really understood that. There was little impact on others, though. They made fun of the guy that made the speech and his little sister as well. Everyone raised their hand when the guy on TV asked if we used the R word. To be honest, even i have used it before. Of course, I don't use it anymore, now that I realized how much it hurts others. I think, over time, we might be able to make a bigger impact on the school and community.

  7. After we watched the video's one of my friends said it was really sad that these kids were being treated like that. She said that she would never use the R word again. Lots of people I know Would say the R word and then realize they said it and say "I forgot I took the pledge".

  8. I'm re-wrighting this post because i don't think my post went through.
Most of the people i know that aren't in partners in pe don't take these things seriously.I still hear people using the r word, but more jokingly then they would have.People think that we are trying to erase the r word from thier vocabulary but they don't get the real meaning of the erase the r word campaine.

  9. After we watched the videos some of my classmates felt really sad,and i think it left an impact on them.I know alot of people who had taken the pledge, and even those who didnt take the pledge but they dont say the r word as much. Even now after the pledge i have noticed that the word isnt said as much which really good ,and i am glad we had the oppurtunity to participate this year because i think there is a significant change.

  12. I didnt really hear people try to chainge their language about the r-word. When ever someone says it, another person says sarcastically "No r-word!". I was in class and one person had the sticker on that said I pledged from our pledge drive and another person said "did you take the pledge" She said "yeah" "Are you really gonna do it?" "No. I just did it because I wanted a sticker." I thought that, that was really dishonest. She pledged not to say the r-word and isnt going to keep her promise. It really dissapointed me. But in 6th grade I used to say it a lot but when I joined this class, I changed over the way I thought about that word. It is really a hurtful word and I think that it should be banished from our dictionary. But I did see a few people change wich was a good start to banning the r-word.
