We began a discussion on how we talk about people with disabilities and how we explain what condition they have. I want you to go to this website link, Texas Council for Developmental Disabilities, and read the article. It is a bit long, but you can get through it.
Once finished, leave a comment demonstrating 3 correct ways to refer to someone with a disability. (Hint, examples are provided at the end of article, or you can be a go-getter and come up with your own.) This is due Friday, Sept.18.

ReplyDeleteWhat I learned is that the athletes are really people like us. They can do most of the things we do just slower or in a different way. In the people first language you day the persons name then dassability.
I Learned that you shouldn't call people with disabilities "disabled people"! You should call them people with disabilities. You need to treat them they way you would treat your best buddies and the greatest friends!!! Always use first language.

what i just read about was first language it teaches how to talk about a person ,not a disabled person,a person always comes first.because a partner IS a person, friend, buddy, amego what ever you call him/her but they are people so treat them just how you want to be treated.because there just like us but they need a little more help then we do.
ReplyDeletehere are 3 thing you can call some one

ReplyDeleteI learned when i read the article that when you refer to a person that has some disabilities that you call them by their name then say their disability.
SO and so has autism not an autistic person
So and so has a disability not disabled ppl
SO and so uses a wheelchair.
I think its grate that they are starting to notice that there are pepol out there that need help.madison i
ReplyDeleteI learned that 1 in 5 Americans have disabilties and you shouldn't call people with disabilities "disabled","retarded, or "handicapped." You should just call them friend, person, or pal.
ReplyDeletewe should call them a friend a neighboor most of all they are just like us so a kid like us!!!
ReplyDeletethey are not different they are the same i dont know why people judge them for there dissabilitys!!
I learned that its reallt hard for them to switch homes and schools and trying to make new friends.
ReplyDeleteMadeline R.I learned that people come first in a sentence. Litterally! Call them your friend or pal or amigo. And if you could say what their conditions were, than you would say a person with autism or a person with down syndrom. they are people with dissabilities. They are not a Dissabled person. They are just as able as we are. They can do anything that we can just a little bit differently. "I am not dissabled. I am able" -Patrick Henry Huges. Patrick was born with no eyes, and in a wheelchair. He is in the high school marching band with the help of his dad. He started playing the piano at age two, and plays the trumpet in the band. He is incredibly gifted with music. Yet he cant see. But he believes that he is able. To me he is an absolute hero. I think that, that is what the kids with dissabilities in this class believe. If thay are motivated they can do just about anything. Why do people judge them of an accident at birth? That is a really big question that most people who judge them dont know the answer to. They dont know how much it can hurt them and how much it means to them to be able to have a friend when no one else would want to. They only act different because it was the way that they were built. And they were built like that for a reason. To teach people that everybody is different and you shouldnt judge a book by its cover. ;)
ReplyDelete1.Neighbor
ReplyDelete2.Parent
3.Teacher
They are people with disabilities not disabled people...:)
